Lotto 6/49 has been giving away huge jackpots to players across Canada since 1982. In fact, a group of 17 oil and gas plant workers from Camrose in Alberta held the record for the biggest payout ever seen in the country when they won more than $54 million on Lotto 6/49 in October 2005. Under the current rules the jackpot is fixed at $5 million in every draw. But even if the jackpot doesn’t get won, one player is guaranteed to become a millionaire in every draw via the new Gold Ball game.
How to Play Lotto 6/49
As the name of the game suggests, to play the Lotto 6/49 Classic Draw you must select six numbers from 1 to 49. You can either pick your own numbers or choose the Quick Pick option if you'd prefer to have a set chosen at random by the ticket terminal.
You can make up to six Lotto 6/49 selections on each slip. For each one, you'll automatically receive a random code for the Gold Ball Draw. The cost per selection is $3.
There's also the option to add other games to Lotto 6/49 to give you even more chances to win. You can play Western 649 alongside Lotto 649 for an additional $1 per board. If you select the 'Play Both' option on your playslip, you will receive the same numbers for each draw. To get a different set of numbers for each game, leave the 'Play Both' box blank and just say yes to Western 649.
You can also add Extra to your selection for another $1 per play. A random seven-digit number will be generated on your ticket. Match it to the winning Extra number exactly to win the $250,000 jackpot, or pick up a prize for matching the last one, two, three, four, five or six numbers.
You can play up to 25 consecutive draws. Tickets can be purchased until 9:30pm Central Time (8:30pm Mountain Time/7:30pm Pacific Time) on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
How to Win Lotto 6/49
You win prizes in the Lotto 6/49 Classic Draw by matching the numbers you have selected to the winning numbers. You need to get all six the same as the main numbers to win the jackpot, which is always worth $5 million.
The jackpot does not roll over if no tickets match all the numbers. If more than one player wins the jackpot, they split the money.
You can also win prizes by matching fewer numbers, starting from just two out of six. A Bonus Ball is drawn from the 43 numbers that are remaining after the main six have been selected. If this matches one of the numbers on your playslip, it boosts the value of prizes in certain categories.

Gold Ball Draw
You are automatically entered into the Gold Ball Draw when you play Lotto 6/49. For each entry that you have for Lotto 6/49, you receive an eight-number code, followed by a two-digit trailer (for example 12345678-01).
The first eight digits are generated at random and are unique to your Lotto 6/49 ticket (all codes generated in Western Canada begin with a 2 or 3). If you've purchased a ticket with multiple selections, the final two digits will start at 01 for the first one and increase by one for each subsequent selection.
A winning code is selected at random on the night of the draw. Match it exactly, with all the digits in the same place, and you're guaranteed to win at least $1 million. Only the codes that have been generated are entered into the final draw, so there is always a winner.
The ticket that matches the 10-digit number has the chance to win a Gold Ball Jackpot that starts at $10 million and can climb to over $60 million, increasing by $2 million in each draw until someone hits it.
There is initially a 1 in 30 chance of the Gold Ball being drawn and the player hitting the jackpot.
If the Gold Ball is not drawn, the player receives $1 million and the ball is removed from the pool - so the odds of the Gold Ball being drawn get better with each draw unil a lucky winner takes home the jackpot.
